When Piers Akerman uses the phrase chk-chk boom, you know it’s over
It’s tough being a political commentator.
You’ve got to churn out something topical on demand, and if it’s original then that’s a bonus too.
And a favourite columnist’s trick is to pick a tabloid story and try to make it relevant for a duller political topic.
So it was only a matter of time before someone gave chk-chk boom girl Clare Werbeloff a go.
So well done to Piers Akerman of Sydney’s Daily Telegraph for arguably one of the clunkiest segues of all time:
“Yet Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and US President Brack Obama are as much creations of the connected world as Werbeloff… having snowed their audiences, it is now chk-ck boom time.”
It’s a good demonstration that when it comes to tapping into the zeitgeist, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
I thought that hearing that phrase in question time was the real issue with public discourse.

Piers obviously prefers a time when the average punter had little to no access to pollies and thanks to ‘commenters’ like him, we thought they were smarter than us, worked harder than us and somehow were holier than thou like his personal deity, Menzies. And soon I expect to see his piece on how the current Government’s policies are creating the social environment for the Werbeloff’s of the world (which he will claim without any trace of irony either having traded off her ‘catchphrase’). After all, his one consistent theme is “The Lefties Dunnit!”.
