Where there’s smoke
While this front page cover wrap from The West Australian may not be the most crass ever (The Age still holds that title), inviting readers to make smoking history over a photo of a devastating bushfire is perhaps less than ideal.
Thanks for posting this Tim, as I said in my email – I am not having a go at the advertiser (they weren’t to know), more-so that The West didn’t see the potential “bad taste” and pull it at the last minute, even if it did cost them money. I imagine that if I was one of the 60+ who’d lost virtually everything and had seen this, it would be like a poke in the eye with a hot stick.

At the risk of sounding like a moron having only worked in TV but how would the above actually happen???
Surely clients who are paying an absolute premium to get their message on the front page should have last approval before print? Or maybe the editor who decides on the cover story could have informed the advertiser and given them the option to pull out? (at the end of the day if they can decide last minute on the cover story, surely they can extend that courtesy to the advertiser?)
