WIN Tasmania appoints Alex Johnston as state director of news

WIN has appointed former MONA senior media co-ordinator , Alex Johnston as news director for Tasmania.

The move follows WIN downgrading its Tasmanian news operations earlier this year which saw the network’s state bulletin production moved to Wollongong, NSW with the loss of an undisclosed number of staff.

The WIN appointment is a return to the network’s newsroom for Johnston

A Tasmanian native, Johnston started his career in the WIN newsroom in 2004 and moved to Southern Cross Television three years later.  Johnston joined the state opposition leader’s team as a media advisor in 2014 before taking the MONA role in April this year.

“Joining the newsroom at just 19, WIN gave me an incredible opportunity,” Johnston said in a media statement. “I’m passionate about Tasmania and its people, and I’m fascinated by what makes the state tick,”

WIN’s Network news director, Stella Lauri, said: “Alex is the perfect choice for this role,” says  “He has come a long way since those fledgling days in the newsroom, amassing more than15 years’ experience in challenging media and political roles. Throughout them all, Alex’s knowledge of Tasmania – its people and its passions – is obvious.

“I’m confident he will continue WIN News Tasmania’s commitment to local news and local communities.
Congratulations to Alex on his well-deserved appointment.”

Johnston will start his new role at WIN in mid-January 2019.
