Wise and Budgy Smuggler debut new swimwear line for Aussie travellers

International payments app Wise has teamed up with iconic swimwear brand Budgy Smuggler this travel season to help Aussie jetsetters avoid hidden fees abroad.

The campaign has been derived on the back of new research from YouGov, commissioned by Wise, concerning the travel habits of Aussie millennials.

The research found that of the 90% of those who have travelled internationally, 14% have attempted to use local slang but missed the mark, while 23% have unknowingly tried a local delicacy, and 22% have ordered a coffee that doesn’t exist.

It was also revealed that over three in four of Aussie millennials who travelled abroad get annoyed by the habits of fellow Aussies. Top pet peeves include drinking too much (42%), complaining that no one speaks English (34%), and putting on an ‘ocker accent’ (29%).

The study also highlighted that travellers often encounter challenges when handling payments overseas.

According to the data, 18% of respondents may inadvertently offend locals due to tipping etiquette errors and 22% have found themselves in awkward situations attempting to use cards in establishments that only accept cash.

Despite these challenges, a staggering 80% still use bank-issued cards abroad (43% using debit cards, 36% opting for credit cards, and 31% relying on travel cards). However, this reliance comes at a cost, as many travellers end up paying substantial amounts in hidden fees simply due to incorrect spending habits overseas.

As part of the campaign, social media personality and The Inspired Unemployed star Liam Moore has launched a new limited edition Budgy Smugglers swimwear line.

The Budgies, which come in men’s and women’s designs, feature a snug solution to bank card woes: a Wise-card-sized pocket that travellers can use overseas.

Moore said: “Aussies love a Euro Summer – but while they’re on their European adventures, hoards of millennials often fall victim to travel faux pas, from asking someone where the dunny is, or trying to guess someone’s accent.

“Without a doubt, the most underrated faux pas is paying for your entire European summer with your Aussie bank card and getting stung each step of the way with sneaky fees. Something I’ve definitely done before! Luckily, our favourite Aussie cozzies come with a perfect Wise-card-sized pocket, so we can all avoid getting ripped off – whether you’re swimming in Sicily or sunbaking in Santorini.”
