Last nights grand final of Seven’s X Factor was down nearly half a million viewers on last year, leaving the future of the singing competition in some doubt.

Seven could only attract 751,000 capital city viewers to the show from 7.30pm last night, leaving it as the 11th most watched program for the evening, and 29% down on the 2015 finale which had 1.204m.

The show launched this year with 904,000 viewers, but failed to gain traction with viewers not warming to new judges. Unusually for a big reality franchise Seven did not split out the winner announcement segment of the show into a separate ratings period.

RBT, which aired on Nine at the same time as the grand final managed to attract more viewers with an audience of 759,000, while Ten’s All Star Family Feud gained 548,000, according to OzTam overnight metro ratings.

In the 8.30 timeslot Ten’s Have You Been Paying Attention, which ran up against the winner announcement, also managed more viewers with 757,000.

HYBPA was the most watched show across the major ad demographics.

Nine’s local drama Hyde & Seek lost traction from last week with only 567,000 compared to 595,000 from 8.40pm.

In news, Seven won the evening once again with 1,045m tuning in at 6pm and 1.04m at 6.30pm. Nine managed 912,000 at 6pm and 916,000 at 6.30pm.

In total audience share, Seven won the evening with 19.1% ahead of Channel Nine which had a share of 17.6%. ABC came in third with 16.4% in front of Ten’s 13.9%.
