Kerry O’Brien: Australia’s finest political scalp-taker

The ABC’s Kerry O’Brien is of course a national treasure.

But I can’t think of another example where a single journalist has delivered the two biggest political stories of the last seven days purely through the power of his interviewing technique.

First came last Wednesday night on the 7.30 Report when prime minister Kevin Rudd lost his cool.

And just to show that the former Gough Whitlam press secretary doesn’t show favouritsm when it comes to putting a spoke into political careers it was opposition leader Tony Abbott’s turn last night.

It was an extraordinary, credibility-shredding moment when Abbott admitted you cant always treat what he says as gospel truth.

If you’d forgotten what The ABC was for, that was a good reminder from O’Brien.
