One voice, two social media strategies
As of today News Corp has two new local head honchos – chairman Michael Miller or CEO Peter Tonagh. And it’s already been called into question which one is really in charge.
Things weren’t made any clearer by their first public announcement which issued a joint statement from the pair about Campbell Reid’s new role as chief spin doctor.
But Dr Mumbo wonders if their fate will be decided by their differing approaches to their social media strategies, or who can get the most follows across their profiles.
Today both men launched brand new Facebook pages:
Launched this morning Michael Miller has 86 likes by midday, while PT (as he’s known in the halls of Holt Street) has just 51.
Miller is showing some social media savvy by already putting a post on his page: “Delighted to be spending my first day at News Corp Australia in Adelaide. My time here as MD between 2004-2010 reinforced the entrepreneurial spirit of News Corp.”
However PT appears to be pursuing his own social strategy, opting to post to his recently-minted Twitter profile instead about what a brilliant time he is also having in Adelaide, where the Murdoch empire began: “Great to be spending my first day as CEO with the team from the Adelaide Advertiiser [sic]”.
And with 226 followers on there already he’s stolen the social march on Miller. Let the games begin.
Update 3.50pm – Dr Mumbo missed Michael Miller’s new Twitter account, which is surprising given it has a similar catchy handle to PT’s @mm_newscorpaus.
