72 and Sunny to work with Google locally and continues recruitment push with Johnny Tan as ECD

72andSunny will open its Sydney office doors in Woolloomooloo with Google, eBay and Dropbox as local clients, with the agency set to also collaborate on projects with Semi-Permanent, Sea Shepherd and AFTRS.

The news follows Mumbrella’s announcement a month ago the Los Angeles-based advertising agency would set up its first Australian office in Sydney.

The agency will also be setting up in Singapore.

The Sydney and Singapore agencies will be led by former BMF managing partner Chris Kay, who was formerly managing director and head of brand management for the agency in Los Angeles, while former strategy director for The Monkey’s, Mollie Hill, was one of the first appointments.

John Boiler, founder and creative co-chair said the “radically diverse cultures” and “innovative spirit” across the Asia Pacific region inspired 72andSunny to launch offices.

“In Sydney and Singapore, we’re building with a mixture of homegrown and local talent to create a unique and regionally relevant expression of our company and culture. We look forward to finding some like-minded partners to share this opportunity with,” Boiler said.

Commenting on his appointment, Kay said: “I am beyond stoked to help grow a dynamic and diverse creative company that can operate at the pace and energy of New AsiaPac.

“Collaborating with smart, modern partners, both internally and externally across both offices, is already pretty inspiring, and no doubt will allow us to create game-changing ideas as we grow.”

Johnny Tan joins the agency from BBH Shanghai, where he was chief creative officer. He will fill the role of executive creative director across both the Sydney and Singapore offices.

Prior to BBH China, Tan was the executive creative director at BBD China and a creative director at Y&R New York.

Tan said he was looking forward to joining the 72andSunny family on “home turf.”

According to LinkedIn, other employees in the Sydney office include brand co-ordinator Thomas Galluzzo, junior writer Nathan Pashley, junior designer Heath Sims and strategist Neil Sura, Ngaio McCreadie, director of operations and talent and freelance senior producer Whitney Hawthorn.

McCreadie most recently held the role of partner and strategic business lead at BBH London.

72andSunny founder and creative co-chair Glenn Cole will be in Australia at the end of May to judge AWARD, the creative awards program for industry body The Communications Council, but the agency is expecting to open its doors before his arrival.

Globally, the agency’s current clients include Carlsberg, ESPN, Starbucks, Adidas, Call of Duty and Samsung.
