ABC beats Seven and Ten with 17.5% audience share

ABC has obtained a 17.5% overall audience share for Monday night television, beating Ten for the fourth consecutive night and finishing in a close second to Nine’s 18.9% share.

Seven was in a very close third with a share of 17.1%, which left Ten in fourth with 11.9% and SBS with 4.9%.

This is the fourth night in a row the national broadcaster has beaten Ten in terms of overall audience share, according to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings. On Friday, ABC had 12.4% to Ten’s 9.3% and on Saturday ABC beat both Nine and Ten with a 15.2% share and five shows in the top 10. On Sunday, the national broadcaster finished third with 12.4% ahead of Ten on 9.3%.

In a news-dominated line up for Monday night television ABC News at 7pm averaged 868,000 metro viewers, followed by current affairs program 7.30 which grabbed 789,000 metro viewers.

According to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings, ABC’s current affairs program topped the timeslot despite Seven’s First Dates returning to air for episode seven of season two with 703,000 metro viewers.

Nationally – including metro and regional affiliate stations where the program is broadcast – the dating show saw 1.104m tune in.

Although it finished at number 11 on the ratings ladder, First Dates was the most-watched program across key advertising demographics 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Nine’s RBT aired at the same time and saw 668,000 metro viewers tune in and 976,000 nationally, finishing third in its time slot.

ABC’s Australian Story saw 812,000 metro viewers and 1.184m nationally tune in, to watch the journey of how a religious rehabilitation centre may or may not work for drug addicts at 8pm, also topping its timeslot.

At 8.30pm Four Corners was the most-watched program as 786,000 metro viewers watched the discussion around Facebook and what it means for users’ privacy, while 1.121m watched across the nation.

Airing at the same time, Nine’s House Husbands managed 565,000 metro viewers and 826,000 national viewers, while Seven’s 2017 Australian Swimming Championship fell out of the top 20 most-watched shows.

In the 6pm news battle for the evening Seven News was the most-watched program and averaged 1.123m metro viewers while Nine News pulled 1.099m.

Nationally Seven News averaged 1.781m and Nine News grabbed 1.111m.

At 6.30pm Nine News and Seven News/Today Tonight tied, with both stations pulling 1.070m metro viewers. Nationally, however, 1.615m viewers watched Seven’s 6.30 airing of the news as 1.079m watched Nine’s 6.30pm news.
