ABC’s New Year’s Eve coverage tops first ratings week of 2019

The first television week of 2018 is done and dusted, with the ABC’s New Year’s Eve coverage being the most-watched show over the holiday week, despite the audience being down on last year.

1.262m metro viewers tuned into the ABC’s coverage of the New Year’s fireworks on Sydney Harbour.

Outside the ABC’s New Year’s Eve coverage, the week was dominated by news programs with Seven and Nine’s news and current affairs shows.

Wednesday’s Big Bash League match between Sydney and Perth was the most-watched sports program with a metro audience of 615,000.

The highest-rating session of the fourth Australia-India test match was Saturday’s rain-interrupted late afternoon play which attracted 606,000 viewers to Seven’s coverage.

Outside sports and news, the most watched entertainment show of the week was the ABC’s Saturday night repeat of Death in Paradise with 508,000 viewers.

Seven’s most-watched entertainment shows were The Chase Australia and Saturday night’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory which attracted 437,000 and 435,000 viewers respectively.

For Nine, the best-performing entertainment show was The Hot Seat with 403,000 viewers, while Ten’s best show for the week was its news program which attracted 381,000 viewers. The network’s best non-news show was Jamie and the Nonnas which recorded an audience of 314,000.

Seven won the week with a 20.6% share for its primary channel and 30.8% for the network. Nine had 17.4% and 25.8%.

The ABC once again beat Ten, with 13.5% for its primary channel, compared to Ten’s 8.1% – and 18.5% for the network, compared to Ten’s 15.0%. SBS had 5.8% and 9.9%.
