AFI keeps six-nominee format

The Australian Film Institute Awards will maintain last year’s six-nominee format for its Best Film and Member’s Choice categories.

According to CEO Damian Trewhella, this expanded list of nominees recognises “an impressive field” of features in contention for this year’s award.

In a statement, the AFI pointed out that this year’s Australian films have not only met critical acclaim, but also box office success with Tomorrow, When the War Began ($9m in three weeks), Bran Nue Dae ($7.6m), Animal Kingdom ($4.8m) and Beneath Hill 60 ($3.2m), with Bright Star, The Boys Are Back, I Love You Too and Daybreakers also in the list, with more than $2 million each.

“What’s really encouraging is a number of films in competition this year are already blazing trails internationally and generating a global box office exceeding $100m.  The Boys Are Back, Bright Star, The Tree and Animal Kingdom have all had solid international releases and Daybreakers is at the head of the pack with more than US$50m worldwide. Among a range of films set for international release, Bran Nue Dae is soon to open in North American cinemas,” said Trewhella.

The nominees will be announced on October 27.
