AFR keeps its readers hanging on for The Ashes result
Dr Mumbo salutes The Australian Financial Review’s commitment to topicality in all things.
Take its syndicated strip cartoon Alex, featuring the adventures of a cynical British banker.
For the duration of the festive season, the cartoon vanished from the pages of The AFR, even on the rare days when Fairfax could actually be bothered to print a copy.
Happily, Alex has now returned to The AFR. And what’s he up to this week?
Monday saw him on the plane headed to Australia for The Ashes. Apparently he’s hoping for sunshine.
Today, he’s arrived and is strolling Sydney’s Circular Quay, where he’s speculating about the cost of champagne “if we win”.
It must be a fascinating cliffhanger for AFR readers who remain unaware that England retained The Ashes three weeks ago.
Forget about the Poms, it’s losing to the Kiwi’s, we should be more ashamed about.

Don’t quite get your message, but anyway, hate the All Blacks and those boastful netballers.
