Airline lures Aussies on to Kiwi slopes with new ‘Meanwhile in New Zealand’ campaign

Ice Cream in winter Air New Zealand's latest pitch to Aussies

Ice Cream in winter Air New Zealand’s latest pitch to Aussies

Air New Zealand’s drive to lure Australian’s across the ditch has taken a wintery turn with a very summery product, promoting ice cream on the snowfields of Mt Hutt.

The continuation of its already acclaimed ‘Meanwhile in… New Zealand’ campaign focuses on Christchurch ice cream makers George and Raewyn Taylor who have been selling their wares for 17 years.

Noting that business dropped off in winter as people flocked to the snowfields, Air New Zealand helped them mount their ice cream van on a snowtrack machine allowing them to sell ice cream in the middle of winter surrounded by snow.

Backed by a two-minute video, the couple will set up their van on the slopes of Mt Hutt during Australia’s mid-year school holidays, with special ice creams created for the season with the help of Australian food stylist Sian Redgrave, who developed flavours aimed to tickle the Australian palette.

The work, a combined effort of Host in Sydney and Two Bearded Men in Wanaka, will also give Australians the chance to win back the cost of their flights if they tag a photo of themselves with #MeanwhileInNZ on the slopes through Instagram, Facebook or Twitter

The film ends with the line: Winter Magic Awaits.
