Akubra renews century-long contract with Australian Defence Force
Akubra has renewed its contract to be the sole manufacturer of the Australian Defence Force’s iconic slouch hat, a relationship that dates back to World War I.
Since the first War, Akubra has produced more than 2 million slouch hats for the forces, becoming the official exclusive manufacturer of slouch hats in 2015.
This renewed deal comes after Andrew and Nicola Forrest’s private investment group, Tattarang, bought the 148-year-old company last November.
“The slouch hat is a source of national courage and pride with a history that is deeply engrained in Australian families, including my own,” Andrew Forrest said.
“My family has lost sons in all the great wars since the Boer War and the slouch hat, made by Australians for Australians, has a special place in our hearts. “A national symbol should be made in Australia, and I am proud that Akubra will continue to manufacture the slouch on Australian soil.”
Nicola Forrest added: “For almost 150 years, Akubra has prioritised high-quality materials and Australian craftsmanship, ensuring that all Australians, from our farmers to our armed forces, can wear a hat that is comfortable but also stands the test of time.
“The slouch hat is a national icon that portrays a rich tradition of respect and originality that we will proudly continue through crafting it here in Australia, by Australian hands.”
The new agreement accounts for up to 25,000 slouch hats, which will be manufactured at Akubra’s purpose-built workshop in Kempsey. Each hat takes six weeks to make, with 162 steps, passing through 60 pairs of hands.
According to Akubra, the slouch hat was designed by Colonel Tom Price in 1885 and was “originally turned up at the right side to enable troops to look their inspection officers in the eye.”
By 1890, it had become official army uniform for all of the Australian armed forces.
