And the winner is Ikon… no sorry, Starcom
Yep, World Cup fever is back. To celebrate its return to SBS the public broadcaster held its own version of the tournament, pitting media agencies against each other.
There was blood, there were tears. Then the tournament began.
Four years ago when it was last run, Ikon took the tournament – which includes best cheer-leading, commentator, foosball and futsal team.
But this year, the overall winner was Starcom, which also won the hard-fought futsal component of the competition.
SBS’ Les Murray, a leading face and voice of football in Australia, was wheeled out for the night announcing the winners.
But he may have gotten a bit ahead of himself when he read out that Starcom had been awarded best cheer squad.
The kitted up Ikon crew, complete with red and white cheer-leading outfits and pom poms, looked more than a little disappointed… while Starcom looked mildly surprised and a little indifferent.
Calm was restored however when Murray corrected himself and gave the trophy to its rightful owners, Ikon. Phew.
So Starcom may have won futsal and it may have been the overall tournament winner, but it’ll never match up to Ikon’s cheer squad. Never.
SBS 2010 Media World Cup winners:
- Best cheer squad – Ikon
- Best commentator – Pip, Mediacom
- Foosball – Mindshare
- Futsal – Starcom
- OVERALL WINNER – Starcom
Special goes mention to Simon Canning from The Australian for a stoic goalkeeping performace that helped Industry Media to a rampant 4-2 triumph over Zenithoptimedia.
As for some of Tim Burrowes’ commentary skills and self-styled self-appointed Brian Clough esq management techniques, well, less said the better…

The real star was SBS’s Jane McMillan for stoically taking an elbow in the mouth from win-at-all-costs commercial boss Richard Finlayson…
