Aurora programs month long NAIDOC line-up

Subscription community TV channel Aurora is running a month long programming line-up in recognition of NAIDOC Week, with the theme Spirit of the Tent Embassy, 40 years on.

Aurora, Australia’s leading not-for-profit subscription community channel, is celebrating Australia’s Indigenous community this July, with a new programming line-up in recognition of NAIDOC Week 2012 (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee).

In support of this year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘Spirit of the Tent Embassy: 40 years on’, Aurora will screen the documentary film Ningla A’NA on Sunday 8th July at 8pm. Created in 1972, the film journey’s the history of events and political struggle surrounding the establishment of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy at Parliament House. It provides a unique and in-depth look into Indigenous rights and Aboriginal activism in Australia.

On Wednesday night at 6pm, Aurora screened a special edition of SkillsOne TV, which shed light on Indigenous employment programs within Australian businesses, including ANZ and Coles. SkillsOne TV also investigated Indigenous initiatives in local Australian communities, such as the Paws Up program in Armidale – which reaches out disengaged Indigenous youth by giving them a working dog to train, as part of its Backtrack program (www.backtrack.org.au).

Aurora CEO Phyllisse Stanton said, “As an independent broadcaster, we deeply are passionate about screening diverse and innovative content to raise awareness of community issues and interests and sharing these with Australian audiences.

“Support for annual Indigenous events is important at Aurora. To get into the spirit of NAIDOC Week this 2012, Aurora is stretching the celebrations with month long programming specials to encourage a greater understanding of Indigenous history and to showcase the talents of Indigenous Australians,” said Ms Stanton.

Throughout July, Aurora will also screen ‘Who We Are’ and ‘Who we Are in Sport’, produced by Foxtel. ‘Who We Are’ is a 2010 series featuring the works of Australian Indigenous artists such as Rhoda Roberts. The series goes behind the scenesinto the artist’s world and invites audiences to experience the meaning behind Indigenous art.

‘Who we Are in Sport’ profiles some of Australia’s best known Indigenous athletes who have achieved world-wide sporting accolades, including former Australian footballer and boxing champion Anthony Mundine and Nova Peris, the first Indigenous Australian to win an Olympic gold medal.

In recognition of NAIDOC Week, Ms Stanton said audiences can tune in to Aurora channel to join in the month long festivities.
