Australia knocked out of Eurovision 2024

Australian duo Electric Fields has been knocked out of Eurovision 2024 in the first semi-final, denying Aussies the chance to cheer on our country during Sunday’s final.

Australia joined Poland, Iceland, Moldova, and Azerbaijan as the first nations to leave the competition. Despite the loss, Electric Fields’ vocalist Zaachariaha Fielding and keyboard player Michael Ross were pleased with their performance.

“We did a killer performance,” Fielding told presenters backstage at Malmo Arena, in Sweden. “We felt like rock stars. That audience, they were just giving. It’s going to be a memory that will be embedded with us for the rest of our lives.”

The pair performed their song One Milkali (One Blood). Electric Fields famously came second to Kate Miller-Heidke during 2019’s Eurovision – Australia Decides competition on SBS, narrowly missing the chance to represent the country.

Ross said that they came to the competition  “with open hearts”, adding the whole event was a “major undertaking for a lot of people”.

He didn’t hide his shock at not making the final, but was diplomatic.

“I would just say, keep an eye on our story,” Ross said, “because even though Eurovision is a major, major deal, a major moment –  it’s actually not the best of what we’ve got coming. Keep your eye out.”

Eurovision is live each morning from 5am until Sunday morning, with prime time ‘access all areas broadcasts from Friday 10 – Sunday 12 May at 7:30pm on SBS and SBS On Demand.
