The announcement:
The Australian newspaper industry continues to lead the environmental charge with the latest report on old newsprint (ONP) recovery by the Publishers National Environmental Bureau (PNEB) showing 78% of Australia’s newspapers are recycled every day, compared with 75% in the USA*.
In addition, exports of recycled newspapers have almost doubled in the past decade from 27% to 52% according to the report, which was conducted by Industry Edge for the PNEB (part of The Newspaper Works).
Exports to China alone have reached 205 kilotons a year – the equivalent of 742 airbuses** – and the average newspaper is recycled seven times.
While there has been no national legislation enforcing recovery rates of ONP, the continuing voluntary undertakings by the PNEB has seen recycling go from rates of just 28% of newspapers 20 years ago, to 78% today.
“It’s a little-known fact that newspaper publishers were integral in the establishment of the kerbside recycling program we all now take for granted,” The Newspaper Works CEO, Mark Hollands said.
“More than 20 years ago the Australian newspaper industry recognised the importance of recycling, took action and invested $135m in a revolutionary de-inking plant that could recycle recovered newspapers.
“This investment has helped foster a culture of recycling of which the industry can be extremely proud,” Hollands said.
