Beauty and the Geek debuts well down on last year with 612,000 viewers

Seven’s 2014 debut of reality dating show Beauty and the Geek pulled an audience of 612,000, well down on the 804,000 the show pulled at its launch last year.

The result is a disappointing start for the Seven franchise, which is now in its fifth Australian season, although the show has traditionally started low before building a greater audience around the time of the makeovers and up to the finale.

Meanwhile The Block has continued to consistently deliver strong audiences ahead of Sunday’s auction with 1.388m tuning in for last night’s episode at 7.30pm and Big Brother drawing a solid 739,000 viewers at 8.30pm.

Without the Bachelor Ten saw its audience fall off with Jamie’s Comfort Food luring 439,000 viewers at 7.30pm while Madam Secretary appears to have retained a solid portion of its audience off the back of its post Bachelor launch. The US political drama drew 604,000 viewers, down from 740,000 viewers last week, but still a stronger audiences than many of Ten’s other 8.30pm weeknight shows.

Seven’s highest rating non news program was Highway Patrol at 7.30pm which had 815,000.

The Changing Minds – The Inside Story episode being screened on the ABC as part of the Mental As mental health awareness campaign drew 582,000 at 8.30pm while Catalyst at 8pm drew 572,000.

In the news stakes Nine beat Seven with 959,000 viewers to 938,000 in the 6pm slot however, Nine’s audience went up again in the 6.30pm slot to 983,000 while Seven’s fell the 918,000 for its combined news and Today Tonight offering.

Nine won the night in terms of audience share on its main channel, with 22.6 per cent, Seven 18.6 per cent and Ten had 11 per cent, behind ABC on 13.5 per cent.
