Best Job – more like most exhausting
Well it seems last year’s Best Job in the World turned out to be more a case of ‘most exhausting job in the world’ if you’re to believe the lucky Briton who was given the task of promoting the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef for Tourism Queensland.
Ben Southwall told The Sunday Telegraph newspaper in the UK that far from the dream job he had anticipated, he found himself working 19 hour days and had very little time for sunbathing and relaxing.
All in all his workload saw him visit 90 ‘exotic’ locations, make 47 video diaries, give 250 media interviews – including a little one with someone called Oprah, post more than 75,000 words in 60 separate blogs, upload more than 2,000 photos, and tweet more than 730 times.
He told the paper: “Not just the interviews and the social side of it, but also sitting up late at night blogging and uploading pictures, it’s very time consuming.”
Dr Mumbo wonders exactly what it was Southwall was expecting to do in his job promoting the islands to the global audience? Among others, he also enjoyed the use of a $4.5m beachside mansion with glorious ocean views during his stay.
The tourism body has since offered him a new 18 month, six-figure contract.
Yes, Dr Mumbo’s heart bleeds for the poor, over-worked, underpaid chap.
Sorry but I can’t resist replying to this one …
Daemon Digital’s ‘7 days in Sydney’ campaign for Tourism NSW generated 343 tweets and twitpics, 74 blog posts, 61 videos and 455 images in around 10 days (there was a small amount of pre holiday content). Our campaign objectives and overall approach couldn’t be more different though and it seems the PR aspect took up most of his time – around 10 media interviews a week, right? That sounds pretty exhausting to me!

I have to admit, for someone who had nothing else to do – this was his job for the year after all – that’s really not that much.
As I posted on Twitter this morning a quick scan showed I wrote at least 30,000 words for my last job in just a couple of months. Only 75,000 words? What a crock. Was he writing by throwing tropical fish at the keyboard?!
