Best of the Week: Radio’s new talent conveyor belt
Welcome to Unmade, written in the UK while you were sleeping on Saturday morning.
I find myself living in Bizarro World, where Friday’s daily infection total in the UK fell below 100,000 while Australia’s hit 130,000. A lot can happen in a few weeks.
Happy National Bagel Day.
Today’s writing soundtrack: Leonard Cohen – Songs of Love and Hate. I’m embarrassed to say this is the first time I’ve heard it.
Nice one Tim, this style of article is my favourite from you!
Two comments about radio:
1. It’s a funny coincidence that the NSW regional breakfast show which is taking away opportunities for talent to learn in the regions is hosted by Maz, who as you note wasn’t developed enough in the regions before taking on 2DayFM breakfast. It’s a small world in media… I must say personally I liked her show with Gawndy last year better than any of the Sydney offerings.
2. If reality TV talent is good/likeable enough with appropriate support then surely they can also succeed without busting their gut for years in the regions or weekends? Think Fitzy in Nova, and Julie Goodwin at StarFM who pretty quickly grew her show with Rabbit to number 1 in the market.
