Box Office: IF pulls over $3m opening weekend

Ryan Reynolds and a purple blob led the Australian box office this past weekend, pulling $3.1 million at the box office, with 149,000 people seeing the John Krasinski-directed film, IF, this past weekend.

Last week’s #1 movie, Kingdom of the Planet Of The Apes, was the second-most watched film of the weekend, with 118,000 coming through, while The Fall Guy sold another 61,000 tickets to bring its total box office to $11.5 million in its fourth week.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 – the first of a trilogy rebooted from the famous 2008 film – took in $342,000 opening weekend, with 21,000 tickets sold, while Zendaya’s tennis thriller, Challengers, sold another 19,000 tickets to top total box office past $4.5 million after five weeks at the cinemas.

The strong numbers come after Universal Pictures ANZ director of marketing, Suzanne Stretton-Brown, appeared on Mumbrella’s one-on-one podcast series this month where she discussed how the Australian cinema industry is winning back moviegoers.
