Digital publisher Private Media has hired Bronwen Clune as editor of its business startup site StartupSmart replacing Gavin Lower who is moving into PR.

Clune has attracted a loyal readership as a columnist for The Guardian Australia, which she will be free to continue as the publisher does not see a conflict of interest with the national site.

Private Media CEO Marina Go told Mumbrella Lower had grown traffic to the site by more than 40 per cent in his year at the helm, but had left to pursue his passion for PR.

Clune has startup experience having worked at Pollenizer and Beacon Ventures as a customer development manager and digital director respectively, and she founded Norg Media and journalism newsletter Newsgraf, and is a director of organisations such as content production company The Blogging Co and a board member for The Foundation for Public Interest Journalism.

Oliver Milman was editor of the publication when it launched in 2010 until he left to work as a journalist for The Guardian in April last year.

StartupSmart has a readership of around 3,100 daily users according to Nielsen data for February, and around 68,000 monthly unique browsers, with Go describing it as “a high-performing niche website”.

She added: “Gavin did a great job for us and we wish him well. We were very fortunate Bronwen was around. She has a strong following as a columnist for The Guardian and an incredible reputation in the startup community.”

Private Media also publishes Crikey, and recently announced it will launch a new publication for public servants called The Mandarin.
