Canva appoints OMD as its first ever media agency of record

Visual communications and graphic design platform Canva has announced the appointment of OMD for its media strategy, planning and buying.

Canva’s recent expansion has been rapid, with the company surpassing $500 million annualised revenue in April this year according to its own reports. It recently updated its market valuation to be US$15 billion (approx. A$19.3 billion).

Founded in Australia in 2013, Canva is now used in over 190 countries and has over 55 million monthly active users, with OMD’s appointment marking the first time Canva has worked with a dedicated media agency.

OMD’s appointment to Canva’s media account covers Australia, as well as New Zealand, the UK and Canada. OMD has worked the account in the US since mid-2020.

OMD Australia CEO, Aimee Buchanan, said Canva’s core values align with OMD’s own.“We are thrilled to be working with Canva as they begin to focus on the Australian market.

“Canva’s core values are closely aligned to our own values, particularly around empowering others and making the world a better place through positive actions, inclusion and diversity. We look forward to strengthening these ambitions together through our partnership.”

OMD Sydney managing director, Laura Nice, added: “We are so excited to welcome Canva to the OMD family.

“We look forward to seeing the partnership of Canva’s data-driven approach powered by Omni, OMD’s people-based precision marketing platform, at work as we help Canva connect with Australians.”

The appointment is effective immediately, and Canva chief marketing officer, Zach Kitschke, said OMD’s appointment will help the company to work towards its global goals.

“As the world becomes an increasingly visual place, almost every profession now needs to create engaging visual content. We’re excited to expand our partnership with OMD and pursue our crazy big goal to empower the world to design.”

The account win keeps up momentum for OMD, which added the Victorian Government master media account, worth around $100 million, to its remit in March this year.

In late 2020, OMD was also appointed to the media account of Petbarn parent company Greencross, reappointed to Dulux Group’s media account.
