Channel Ten hires ex Y&R colleague Matt McGrath to lead marketing
Ten boss Hamish McLennan has turned to his trusted former colleague Matt McGrath to lead the troubled broadcaster’s marketing.
McGrath take over brand communications, marketing and promotions in the new role of chief brand officer.
Network Ten CEO Hamish McLennan, who worked closely with McGrath during his time at the head of Y&R said: “I have known Matt for many years and he is without doubt one of the best creative and strategic minds in the Australian media and marketing sector.”
“I am delighted he has agreed to join Network Ten to work on our external and internal marketing, including our messaging around our core programs.”
The appointment comes after a review of Ten’s marketing department following the departure of chief marketing office Tony McMaster in February. The former Ten CMO left the company just days after the firing of former Ten CEO James Warburton.
“Matt will create a consistent view of our brand, on and off air, and bring innovative thinking to how we communicate with consumers and advertisers,” said McLennan.
McGrath, formerly executive chairman of Y&R Brands – is now the third former senior Y&R executive to join the ranks of the television network. Previous CEO James Warburton last year appointed Y&R Australia CEO Russell Howcroft to the role executive general manager based in Melbourne. His appointment was followed by the dramatic hiring of former Y&R global chairman McLennan who replaced Warburton earlier this year.
Ten’s new chief brand office was previously CEO and executive chairman of Y&R Brands Australia and New Zealand, and before that, chief creative officer of George Patterson Y&R Australia and New Zealand. He has also worked for leading marketing services companies in London and Singapore.

Sounds like a good move to me…..all we need now is a guy like matt who understands brand to do a makeover of the NRL….instead of the money grab for totally irrelevant sponsors who mean good but do little for the integrity of the game, merchandise which is tacky but seen as the wholly grail of revenue and gambling businesses which spring up every few months and appear to be the only monetary saviour for TV stations!

Isn’t this whole being boss of a aussie network kind of a come down in the world for Hamish?
From being worldwide boss of a multinational agency to managing a tiny TV network with a couple of stations – must be a bit embarrassing for him.

Well hopefully he’ll actually LISTEN to the station like a punter in his mew role and get rid on the whiney nasal try hard voices that try to sell the station programming. The image is way off what they are trying to make of themselves and as an “advertising” man he should know better!!
