The announcement:

Award-winning journalist Chris Uhlmann has been appointed to the new position of ABC Political Editor.

The appointment formalises Uhlmann’s standing as Australia’s pre-eminent federal political journalist and ensures his investigative and interviewing skills and analysis will be available across all ABC broadcast and digital news outlets.

ABC Head of Newsgathering Craig McMurtrie said: “This is a crucial on-air role and Chris is uniquely suited for it.

“A Walkley Award-winning political journalist, Chris has been a reporter and presenter for our flagship AM and 7.30 programs and a regular contributor to other ABC News outlets.

“Along with the AM team, he championed a new approach last year, presenting the agenda-setting morning program from our Canberra Parliament House Bureau. It has been highly successful.”

Uhlmann worked for The Canberra Times before joining the ABC in 1998 and was most recently presenter of AM. His previous roles include establishing the political coverage for ABC News 24 and being co-host and political editor of 7.30. He is also co-author of two political novels.

Uhlmann said: “I have been part of the ABC’s Canberra-based political coverage, in many roles, for eight years. I am blessed to work with journalists who personify the integrity and experience that makes the national broadcaster the most trusted brand in news.

“It is a privilege to be asked to step into this leadership role in Parliament House. I look forward to working with the bureau chief, Gillian Bradford, and my colleagues on what looms as another fascinating year in federal politics.”

Once the summer edition ends Michael Brissenden will be interim presenter of AM until a permanent replacement is announced.
