Cinemas experience quiet box office weekend ahead of release of new Star Wars film
The last seven days saw takings at the Australian box office down on previous weeks, with most studios holding their new releases back ahead of Thursday’s release of the latest Star Wars – The Force Awakens.
The Hunger Games, Spectre, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Creed were the top four for a second in a row, all taking ticket sales of more than $1m.
Ron Howard’s Moby Dick epic In the Heart of Sea again did poorly selling $630,000 across 308 screens.
Meanwhile The Hunger Games has now sold more than $25m worth of tickets in four weeks, while James Bond film Spectre has sold $31.6m in a similar period.
According to reports more than $50m worth of pre-sale tickets for the new Star Wars film have already been bought in US.
