Clemenger drafts joint ECDs to replace Richard Maddocks

Clemenger BBDO has appointed Paul Nagy and Mike Spirkovski as joint executive creative directors to take over from Richard Maddocks in its misfiring Sydney operation.

Nagy will move from his role as creative director of Clemenger Wellington, while Spirkovski has most recently been consulting at Droga5. The pair had previously worked together at Leo Burnett Sydney.

They will take on their new roles in June.

Maddocks announced his resignation in March after a relatively brief stint in the role.

Nagy’s appointment is the second time in a row that Clems Sydney has looked to its network in New Zealand to fill a hole.

Maddocks joined from Colenso BBDO in New Zealand in what was described at the time as “the single most important appointment to be made at Clemenger BBDO Sydney for the future.”

But despite his credentials and creative track record, the Syndey work failed to live up to what he had achieved in Auckland.

Maddocks had replaced Danny Searle, who left Clemenger BBDO Sydney for a role in Singapore. Mumbrella understands that Maddocks’ current plan is to return to New Zealand and work on a book.

Last month saw the departure of digital creative director Nic Hodges from Clemenger BBDO Sydney to Mediacom.

The agency issued a press release with the following comments from those involved:

“Paul and Mike are proven creative leaders and genuinely respect and inspire each other. The minute we met them we knew they were the right guys” said Andy Pontin, Managing Director. “Paul’s a Clemenger guy, and that makes an enormous difference to us.”

“We know that extraordinary outcomes creatively come from a collaborative culture, this ECD team approach should be seen as emblematic of our taking this approach to a whole new level, very exciting,” said James McGrath, Creative Chairman of Clemenger BBDO.

“We’ve been mates for years and have always shared the same ideas about what makes great work and a great agency. We believe the single most important step in delivering highly effective and innovative solutions is to build a level of trust; both in client relationships and to inspire a unique culture within the agency,” Paul Nagy said.

“When Clemenger first approached us with their plans for the future of the agency we were blown away. The goals are ambitious, exciting and something we can’t wait to get moving on,” Mike Spirkovski said.
