Community Newspaper Group appoints Ken Burrowes as editorial director

News Corp’s Western Australian newspaper business, The Community Newspaper Group, has appointed Ken Burrowes as editorial director.

The group publishes 17 community newspapers in Perth’s metropolitan region, including the Canning Times, Guardian Express, Eastern Reporter and the Weekend Courier.

Burrowes joins the company after two and a half years as digital integration manager, group editorial, for News Corp Australia.

In his time as a journalist, he worked across the Herald Sun and The Herald and Weekly Times.

Burrowes joins Guy Turner, the group’s new insights and strategy director, and Tamika Cruikshank, digital sales director, to help grow Community News’ position in the digital media landscape.

Commenting on the appointment, Community Newspaper Group’s chief executive officer, Paul Eteen-Bliss, said Burrowes will be a “significant asset” to the group.

“Ken is a seasoned journalist with over 30 years’ experience in traditional media, and brings with him an unparalleled knowledge of news journalism and digital integration and will be a significant asset to Community Newspaper Group,” Eteen-Bliss said.

“In today’s changing media landscape, it is imperative that the contemporary newsroom is designed to deliver the content and services that match the modern reader’s needs – both in print and digital – and it is paramount that Community continues to evolve to meet those needs.”

Burrowes said he was excited to join the editorial team.

“Community newspapers are the lifeblood of our cities. They care about the issues that affect all of us – education, health, law and order and jobs – and can report on them in a way larger media outlets cannot,” he said.

“In an age when the world has grown very small in a digital communications sense, local content is a tremendous advantage and will play a pivotal role in our success.”

Editor in chief, Matt Zis, and digital editor, David Johns, will report directly into Burrowes once he commences his role in July.
