Content agency DOTF releases ‘Asking for a Mate’ web series to prevent violence against women

Content agency Department of the Future (DOTF) has launched a seven-part web series, Asking for a Mate, for not-for-profit organisation Our Watch.

Asking for a Mate aims to reduce and prevent violence against women and children by encouraging young people to develop healthy, respectful and equal intimate relationships.

The content series features young adults answering confronting questions including “what is the funniest or most embarrassing sexual experience you’ve ever had?”, “the most embarrassing thing you’ve done or said on a date?”, “the worst way you’ve ever been dumped?” and “can you really be mates with your ex?”.

Asking for a Mate, which has formed part of Our Watch’s The Line campaign, aims to positively influence people’s behaviour by discussing “off limit” subjects in a light hearted way.

Ivan Gomez, creative director at DOTF, said in a statement: “The series showcases opinions representing all sexualities, genders, and a diverse mix of ethnic backgrounds, with a tone ranging from funny and lighthearted, to earnest and reflective. The Line’s brand ambassadors such as AFL footballer Marcus Bontempelli and musician Tia Gostelow were also involved.

“From a creative standpoint, this series was very much about the talent. At the heart of it, we had to make these people comfortable, as they weren’t actors, and we had to get the best out of them and convey the right messages.”

The campaign will roll out across Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat.

Jilly Charlwood, director of marketing and communications at Our Watch, said research has shown that young people struggle to know where to draw the line when it comes to relationships, sex and dating.

“By asking questions about topics related to dating, relationships, sex and consent that are often considered ‘awkward’ and ‘off-limits’, the series supports young people to openly explore what’s ok and what’s not when it comes to interpersonal relationships.”
