Cooking shows Restaurant Revolution and The Hotplate cannibalise each other on launch
Seven and Nine’s new cooking shows Restaurant Revolution and Hotplate have failed to fire on their first outing with both shows drawing audiences of under 800,000.
Nine’s The Hotplate drew 784,000 metro viewers to win the 7.30pm time slot, while Seven’s Restaurant Revolution had 676,000 viewers, a result which was behind the ABC’s 7.30 and also Joanna Lumley’s Tran-Siberian Adventure which was on at 8.30pm and got 707,000 viewers, according to the OzTam overnight metro ratings.
The result will be a disappointment for both major TV networks which have heavily promoted the cooking franchises, which they scheduled to launch the night after the finale of Ten’s Masterchef which drew more than 2m for its winner announcement on Monday night.
The result came about on a night when Ten ran dead in the 7.30pm time slot with the network airing Modern Family repeats which drew 547,000 and 529,000 respectively.
The return of Go Back to Where You Came From boosted SBS’ share to 6.1 per cent from 4.2 per cent last Tuesday, with the show debuting with 424,000 viewers. That number was down on the 524,000 who watched the first episode of series one in 2011, and 752,000 in 2012 when they used high profile Aussies for the show.
A Current Affair was actually the most watched show of the night with 1.16m viewers while Nine’s news bulletin had 1.15m in the 6pm slot and 1.10m in the 6.30pm slot compared with Seven which had 1.01m and 958,000 respectively.
In the breakfast battle Today beat Sunrise again with Nine’s show getting 305,000 to pip Seven’s 297,000 viewers.
Nine won the night in terms of audience share with 18.7 per cent, just ahead of Seven’s 18.4 per cent while Ten tied with ABC on 13.5 per cent.
More to come.

Enough of the food shows already. Gels, foams, crumbs, drizzles, dots of sauce and sprinkles of tears. I feel completely directionless because I don’t have a “food dream” or “food journey”. I have an unending need to place food on a plate with tweezers and when my plating is substandard, I simply just burst into tears.
But seriously when are any of the networks going to invest in decent programs outside the reality genre. Dramas? Decent Documentary series? It’s the same old hackneyed tired formulas re-badged with different names.

Tuned in to Restaurant Revolution — stilted and dull (both the contestants and the judges). Can’t see this threatening any of the other big food shows. Won’t be tuning in again.

Hotplate went for the over-the-top stereotypes while Restaurant Revolution was dull – many of the contestants had cardboard personalities. Both were cringeworthy but for different reasons. Hotplate will win the ratings war but the show has ripped off both Masterchef and My Kitchen Rules, not original at all and not in the same league of viewer watchability as MC & MKR.

Both will be rescheduled and then one will be cancelled not sure which yet?

Tried to watch Hotplate and found it a MKR poor copy and boring and really have better things to do. As for the other one on 7 – just not interested – too many cooking shows and really who cares. And lets face it these shows are far more about the contestants than cooking ( who would learn nothing about cooking by watching these shows) and I suggest the public are over the stereotypical couples and set up by producers and editors. Beware Ch 9 and The Block – you have gone the same way where you learn nothing about renovation and I would suggest the thinking public are so over the contestants

DTM- precise and correct. I watched Hotplate- OMG where did they get this restaurant from. Sloppy food, terrible presentation of the food, very out of town low class restaurant, decor that was plastic. hope the other restaurants are a bit more upmarket. very basic everyday food. UGGH!!

Had a look at Restaurant Revolution. So bad. Whoever was responsible for advising Neil Perry to mix it with this lot should be thrown in a deep fryer. Please Neil leave and keep your well earned reputation intact.

when you get off colours and simple phrases I would love to watch this …. But what a poor competition if no one focuses on the food, the cooking + restraunt will follow.
