Ratings Megaweek Day 5: Cougar Town hits ratings low, while Nine’s Footy Show gains ground on Matty Johns

Thursday saw the return of another Australian series this year, with Nine’s navy drama Sea Patrol coming is as the top-rating show of the night.

But it was a disappointing result for Seven’s with US comedy Cougar Town fading, while Nine’s Footy Show gained ground on The Matty Johns Show.

Sea Patrol saw 1.235m people tune in at 8:30pm, beating Seven’s Cougar Town which slipped down to 708,000, according to overnight preliminary OzTam data in the main metro markets.

Overall, Seven had a weak night, with overall free-to-air TV viewing led by Nine with a 27.6 per cent channel share, followed by Seven which narrowly beat Ten with a 21 per cent share.

The number of viewers to Cougar Town, starring former Friends star Courtney Cox, have progressively sunk below the one million mark since its launch episode when it attracted 1.35m.

Ten’s Law & Order: SVU also rated ahead of Cougar Town last night with 860,000 viewers.

In the footy wars, Seven’s The Matty Johns Show remained ahead of Nine’s The Footy Show in Sydney and Brisbane – with the latter broadcast in a later time slot.

In the combined markets Matty Johns attracted 388,000, while The Footy Show came in with 298,000.

However, the number of viewers to the Seven show fell across both cities compared to last Thursday’s result, while in contrast the Nine show enjoyed a slight rise this week.

Meanwhile, Ten’s The Biggest Loser, which has failed to reached the ratings high of previous years, had a strong result last night, winning in its 7:30pm time slot and coming out on top among 16-39s and 18-49s.
