Road Train to premiere at Dungog

Road Train

The Dean Francis thriller Road Train will have its Australian premiere at next month’s Dungog Film Festival, with lead actress Sophie Lowe performing the title song at the event.

“Dungog is growing every year, getting more publicity and exposure for Australian films and I’d like to support that,” producer Michael Robertson told Encore.

The film has been sold by its US-based agent Lightning Entertainment to the UK and Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, South Africa, Middle East and Brazil. It will be screened at the Cannes marketplace next month, and it’s in the final stages of negotiation for a US deal.

In the UK, it might be released direct to DVD by Optimum Releasing, while the US sale is part of a package that includes other films and might also see the film going directly to the DVD market.

“I can’t dictate [whether a film gets a cinema release or goes straight to DVD]; I’m only the producer. Everybody knows how difficult it is to get distribution for Australian films,” said Robertson.

The Australian distributor is Polyphony Entertainment, which will soon show the film to exhibitors to determine the type of release the film will get, and a potential date. Polyphony also provided the distribution guarantee for Road Train.

Directed by Dean Francis and starring Sophie Lowe and Xavier Samuel, Road Train is a thriller about four young friends on a camping adventure in outback Australia, who are run off the road by a mystery road train – a massive three-trailer truck.

Road Train was shot in Adelaide and the Flinders Ranges area of South Australia last year, with financial support from the South Australian Film Corporation.

The premiere has not been scheduled yet, it will take place during the Dungog Film Festival, May 27-30, 2010.
