Dr Mumbo

Dr Mumbo takes a fond look down TV’s memory lane

With the upfronts season finished, commenter Sam nominated Ten’s 1992 season promo as probably the high point of local TV history, saying: “Nothing will come close to this Channel 10 promo. Hands down, the best in the history of Australian television.”

Intrigued, and on a mission to relive his own glory days, Dr Mumbo had a look and found it delivered everything he hoped for; Kylie Minogue in a bath, Bert Newton and a cast of beach babes and dancers with the last vestiges of 1980s Big Hair.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Denise Drsydale showed that some things don’t change on Australian TV while the Wallabies triumphantly holding a trophy showed some things do change.

The Seven and Nine promos from that era are just as enjoyable.

Nine, as the dominant network of the era, went full party mode. With singers, celebrities and the station’s stars being caught out in bloopers.

Meanwhile Seven, then following in Nine’s wake, had its dancers highlighte its American shows and movies with The Nanny, Richard Gere and the climax from When Harry Met Sally.

Some Aussies did get a look-in with Amanda Keller, Magda Szubanski, Ted Bullpit and Steve Vizard all popping up in various parts.

However, Dr Mumbo was disturbed when the now disgraced Hey Dad star, Robert Hughes appeared.

Which shows it’s usually better to leave the past alone with its big hair, shoulder pads and glittering swimwear.

But Dr Mumbo thanks Sam anyway.
