Dynamic Duos: Bad impressions, a ‘wiggly’ concert, and true crime podcasts
This week in Dynamic Duos, we hear from the hosts of ARN's Not Another Crime Podcast, media personality Georgia Love and comedian Sammy Petersen.
In Dynamic Duos, Mumbrella each week asks two colleagues with a professional and personal affiliation to share with readers the importance of workplace relationships in an increasingly hybridised world of work.
Georgia Love:
Sammy and I had a mutual friend who was bugging me for years to meet him, to the point he reverse-psychologied (it’s a word if I say it’s a word, okay?) me into actually not wanting to meet him.
“Oh my god get over this Sammy guy, you’re being weird. He can’t be that great. Are the two of you in a pyramid scheme? How did you get my address?”, etc.
Alas, Sammy eventually invited me as a guest on his comedy podcast ‘Confessions’ and I couldn’t resist a spot behind the mic. I of course ate my hat (literally? I’ll never tell.) when I immediately fell in love with his warmth and humour. Since then, we’ve been fierce and fast best friends, well and truly taking over the friendship of the aforementioned mutual. Sorry, not sorry, Bill.
Sammy is the most lovable, loyal, kind and funny person anyone’s ever met. He genuinely lights up every room he walks into, I’m actually being entirely selfish in claiming him as my best friend because finding this kind of joy in human form should be shared as widely as possible. I will allow everyone to listen to him through our podcast though but that’s my final offer!
We share the exact same sense of humour and make each other laugh more than anyone else in the world and can talk for hours. We’ve been shushed during numerous movies and live shows, the last to leave many, many venues and yes, often begged to let the staff go home. We’ve truly met our match in each other to the chagrin of many, but hopefully to the delight of more.
Both sharing a love of yapping, I mean podcasting, it was inevitable we would combine our talents to start our own and we just absolutely love it. As a journalist, I’m obsessed with crime, the justice system and storytelling and as my best friend, he’s obsessed with listening to me go on and on and also interrupting me. It’s the perfect outcome, really. It’s also a good excuse to hang out a couple of times a week and call it work!
If you haven’t seen or heard of him yet, I implore you to get on board. Everyone wants to be able to say they knew someone/something before it was cool, and while Sammy’s always been cool, mark my words he’ll become a name you want to be associated with. Just don’t think you can take the role of his bestie because that’s mine.
Sammy Petersen:
G and I met through a mutual friend who had been saying we had to meet for years. We realised after we met that we’d actually been at the same things so many times over but just never met. People kept telling me how much I’d love her.
Finally, I invited her on a podcast ‘Confessions’ I was doing and we immediately hit it off. We could not stop talking — I’d met lots of people through doing the podcast but none where I immediately went “oh we’re going to be friends forever”. I invited her to go and see Murray the red wiggle perform in his new band ‘the soul movers’. It was a Sunday afternoon and, when I went to the bathroom, I came back to see G up dancing with random people in this small pub. I knew then that we’d be as thick as thieves.
We realised that our pets were both named after celebrities — my dog Missy Diggins and her cat Pawdrey Hepburn — and, even though we are so different, we’re basically the same in many ways. Neither of us take things very seriously and are just as comfortable chatting for two days straight or sitting in silence. That’s the mark of a true friend. G is my biggest cheerleader in the world and always celebrates everything I do no matter how big or small.
We decided we would start the podcast together because we’re both so fascinated by true crime stories but wanted to bring our lighter dinner party conversation to the format. It was also an extra excuse for us to hang out once a week (not that we needed it). It makes it feel like we’re getting something done when actually we’re just catching up and talking about a true crime story. It’s the easiest part of my week recording with G and something that I look forward to more than anything.
Georgia on Sammy:
Most memorable moment with Sammy: When we had only recently met, Sammy asked if I wanted to go to “a friend’s gig” on a Sunday night. Being a comedian himself, I thought it was fairly reasonable to assume this was a comedy gig. It was not. His friend was Murray, the original red Wiggle and the gig was a performance of Murray’s pub band, playing original songs and covers of 70s and 80s bangers. I immediately got up and danced embarrassing mum moves as he cheered me on and it was there our friendship was truly solidified!
Best word to describe him: Lovable. And loyal. And funny. And kind. Is that too many? I work in communications, I’m not good with numbers.
Most annoying habit or endearing behaviour he has: Sammy’s most endearing behaviour is his positivity which to be frank, is disgusting. He gets so excited that you can’t help but let that excitement and positivity rub off on you. He genuinely makes you feel warm and fuzzy to be around. Just let me be a grump sometimes, you shiny angel man!
Sammy on Georgia:
Most memorable moment with Georgia: One time I remember being at her house and we spent the whole night doing really bad impressions of celebrities and making each other guess with minimal cues. We did it for hours and hours.
Best word to describe her: There are lots of words that come to mind when I think of G but the main one would be ‘incomparable.’ I’ve never met anyone quite like her and her energy, love for life and her willingness to do anything for a laugh, is unmatched.
Most annoying habit or endearing behaviour she has: G commits to everything 100% which is what I love about her. She never ever half-arses anything. She will go to the biggest effort for the tiniest of things and that’s something I absolutely love. I also hear her voice correcting me every time I pronounce a word wrong. It mostly happens live on the podcast.
