Edelman wins Gumtree

Edelman has won the public relations account for classifieds website Gumtree.

The announcement:

Sydney, 26 July 2012: Edelman, the world’s largest public relations firm, has recently been appointed as the local agency for Australia’s leading free classifieds website, Gumtree.com.au.

The account win follows Edelman’s appointment as local agency for eBay in 2011 and PayPal in 2009, and will see the agency create and execute a variety of campaigns as well as facilitate a press office for the growing business.

Kerry Barnes, Head of Publicity for Edelman Australia and key Gumtree account lead, said the appointment is testament to the firm’s expertise in the changing landscape of commerce. “Gumtree connects people all over Australia, helping them easily find and acquire thousands of products, from furniture and household items, to cars, jobs, tickets and electronics. We are thrilled to be working with such a thriving business that is just as dedicated as we are to engaging and fostering communities.”

Nat Thomas, Corporate Communications Manager at Gumtree.com.au said, “The company is delighted to have Edelman on board in Australia. Gumtree’s business has grown over 150 percent in the last 12 months and we’re keen to leverage Edelman’s expertise in consumer advocacy and outreach to continue growing our user base.”

The partnership kicked off with a recent experiential stunt that surprised and delighted Sydney-siders with free parking paid for by the website. The initiative came after research into ”Depreciation Distress”[1] which revealed that 88 percent of Australians believe a brand new car begins to depreciate as soon as it leaves the dealership. By using Gumtree to buy and sell second-hand cars online, customers are provided with a less stressful option to purchasing a second-hand vehicle which won’t depreciate as much as a new model.
