Ellen has a gay old time – as in fun and happy
Sometimes we forget how funny or odd something can be for people who don’t know the heritage or understand the cultural context of our brands.
Take Streets Golden Gaytime ice cream for example.
Many Australians will have fond memories of munching on a Gaytime when they were young – innocently associating the name with nothing more than having a good time – y’know being happy, cheery, sunny and gay…
But of course in the present day the brand name comes with much more homosexual connotations.
Not that, that’s stopped Streets from playing up to this association, bringing back its old tagline, “It’s hard to have a Gaytime on your own” in its latest advertising campaign.
Dr Mumbo hardly even blinked when noticing the new outdoor, press and TV ads. But for one American tourist, it was all too amusing. And it seemed it was too amusing for Ellen Degeneres as well.

Aw Tim the vid isnt working!
But just imagining the content has me satisfied. Gaytime is hilarious if you arent already familiar, and if you are familiar but get into an immature mood.

Hi guys,
The video appears to be working from our end. Maybe give it another go now.
Cheers,
Camille – Mumbrella
It works, you just need to click on the clip showing Ellen on the bottom left. (after it asks you to accept the friend request, which you ignore)
Thats great, go Ellen.

Aha!
Well Ellen, it is hard to have a Gaytime on your own, so tempting!

The ad was on the back of buses during the Mardi Gras and I thought at the time that it was a very clever campaign.

It’s brilliant for SO many reasons. Great ice-cream, brilliant name, top piece of copywriting. It’s just so memorable and it’s this 50 year old ice cream plastered to the side of a bus. I know this is heresy on this site – but digital can never deliver that!
