Dr Mumbo

End of the road for Shingy the digital prophet

Dr Mumbo is sad to report that everyone’s favourite ‘digital prophet’ David Shing has left the building.

The Aussie who made it big in NYC has exited Verizon Media having been with the company since joining AOL in 2007 – seeing its journey through its brief Oath rebranding and beyond.

In a statement, the man who tested even adland’s tolerance for style over substance in his rapid-fire digital keynotes, went out the way that Dr Mumbo hopes to remember him – with a lot of buzzwords.

Shingy said that he had greatly enjoyed being “an intrapreneur with Verizon Media – becoming the digital prophet, inspiring audiences, educating brands and agencies, and providing a unique perspective on what this industry needs to advance forward”.

“I’ve had the rare privilege of speaking into the soul of our industry (as a futurist) for the past decade, and I believe it’s a critical time to preserve the tenants of human dignity, creativity and compassion – as we engage the thrilling opportunities at hand.”

Since Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk and David Cross created the character Shangy, it’s been hard to think of Shingy any other way.

Dr Mumbo hopes to see his return.
