Engine Group’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games logo unveiled
Brisbane agency Engine Group has won the brief to create the branding for the Gold Coast’s 2018 Commonwealth Games bid.
The logo to accompany the bid was unveiled by the Queensland Premier Anna Bligh today.
She said: “This logo captures the energy of the Gold Coast in a blast of colour. The Gold Coast sun is clearly present in the logo made up of 72 dots to represent each commonwealth country with different sized dots reflecting that the Commonwealth is made up of nations big and small.
“Colours in the logo represent the golden sand, blue water, green hinterland and red sunsets of the Gold Coast as well as the colours of competing nation’s flags.”
Queensland will formally submit a bid in May 2011 with the host city to be announced in November 2011.

A lot better than that bizarre London 2012 Olympic logo.

First reaction, before reading the copy: “So the Gay Games are on the Gold Coast?”

Exactly my thoughts, Stilgherrian. Doesn’t mean I don’t like it though!

All the Gold Coast Org Committee has to do is create an Anti-Delhi bid. Basically, everything they show should feel the exact opposite of the debacle that is the Delhi Games.
Shiny, happy colours. Good weather. Infrastructure that actually exists. Beaches. More beaches. Optimism. Organisational prowess. Transparency.
This logo’s a good start.
They’d actually put on a great show up there though, seriously. It’s the perfect place to stage an event, because the whole city will gear itself up to embrace the Games.

Surely its time for all the billions of dollars that are spent on holding these games to be spent on the millions of starving people that live in, what once was, the Commonwealth of Great Britain?
Do we really need the Commonwealth Games? Are these funds not better diverted to other more worthy causes? And I don’t think we need to hear the “$50 Million spent in 2 weeks to the benefit of the Tourism industry” argument either.
Lets spend the money on education for kids in India and growing sustainable crops in Sri Lanka or whatever….lets make a difference and just wait for the Olympics every 4 years to get our nationalistic and sporting fill.

2.25, yes.
Let’s stop spending on sport, public art, the Australian Ballet, public architecture, film festivals, comedy festivals, parks and gardens.
Let’s also stop spending on luxuries like wine, lipstick, books, designer clothing, smart phones, pay TV, pets, coffee, music and holidays.
Then we can give all that money to all those starving millions.
The world doesn’t work that way. People starve because their own leaders are either corrupt, ignorant, malicious or a combination of all three. Sometimes it’s a freak disaster to blame, but usually not.
So let’s cancel the Comm Games, and I’m sure the Indian Government will immediately redirect the funds and engage in a spot of genuine social re-engineering in an attempt to finally end the awful cycle of poverty in that nation.
And then, if the Gold Coast retracts its bid for the 2018 Games, we’ll finally be able to redress the terrible inequities of our Indigenous population in Australia.
Is that how you see it working?

Hmmmm, no smart arse – but if you want to sit back and spend countless hours watching who’ll win the fucking Dressage event between Canada and Scotland – or the women’s badminton and pay billions for the pleasure – then go right ahead.
I’m just pointing out that this particular event is outdated, completely irrelevant and very expensive to run – notwithstanding most countries that make up the event can’t afford to put it on, let alone send athletes…
Enjoy the Dressage – your paying millions for it!
