Exclusive: interview with Wasted on the Young producer Janelle Landers
Wasted on the Young producer talks to Encore about her first feature and how, with less competition and more opportunities for private investment, it’s easier to make films in Western Australia.
Landers also discussed how the Australian film industry is neglecting the younger demographic, as well as the benefits of working with a major distributor such as Paramount Pictures.
Wasted on the Young opens on March 3.

Interesting interview guys. There are major differences between the social networking campaigns for WOTY and TWTWB. It’s foolish to assume that because they share the same core demographic that the approach (and results) would be the same. On the 29/08, 2 days before the Theatrical Release in Australia, TWTWB reached 25K followers on Facebook, this is with a pre-existing fan base and vocal book community. TWTWB features stars who are moderately well known in Australia and the UK. WOTY on the other hand features actors with little to no local profile within a story that is completely foreign and harrowing to watch.
With book sales in excess of 2 million worldwide this wasn’t anywhere near the numbers we should have had. The reason? We had to earn the communities respect, which we did.
