F for festival. And free
For Sydney’s corporate liggers, this is a big weekend. Tonight sees the MTV Awards; tomorrow there’s the V Festival; and Groove Armada arrives on board the Bacardi Express at Luna Park tomorrow night. Dr Mumbo is aware of some media agency types who’ve scored freebie tickets to all three.
Meanwhile, the award for the most desperate intro of the day goes to The Australian’s music writer Iain Shedden who begins his preview on V thus:
“Joggers panting, ducks quacking, horses trotting … these are the sounds commonly associated with Sydney’s Centennial Park. Tomorrow night, however, 30,000 cries of “Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby”, “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier” and, possibly, “baggy trousers” will puncture the park’s air of tranquillity.”
Which would all be very well if the park didn’t already host gigs all the bloody time.
I believe the Park does emit sounds of tranquillity most of the time. Of the 365 days of panting, quacking and trotting, it is only during Mardi Gras (one day), V Festival (one day), Taste of Sydney and perhaps one or two more events through the year where the tranquillity in the Park is interrupted briefly for entertainment sake. The festivals and events in other arenas of the Parklands are at Hordern, SCG and EQ and do not affect the ducks, joggers or horses.

I wonder how many of the liggers at V Fest will be the ones who worked on the Earth Hour campaign, and will quite happily not give a stuff about the massive amounts of electricity being chewed right through earth hour for the sound and lighting for the show
