The announcement:

Fairfax Media has announced the appointment of distinguished and award-winning business journalist Michael Bailey as the editor of BRW.

Promoted from the role of deputy editor, Bailey has more than 15 years’ experience as a business journalist.

Fairfax Business Media Director Sean Aylmer said: “Michael played a key role in the recent transformation of BRW to a primarily online brand in response to the increasing shift of business audiences to online and mobile platforms. He is the ideal journalist to edit the new BRW.

“Michael will be responsible for directing BRW content and services, as well as repositioning the brand.“

In 2011, Bailey won the Citi Excellence in Financial Journalism award for a BRW cover story on economic indicators. Prior to joining BRW, Bailey was an editor and founding shareholder at Conexus Financial and he has also held editing and reporting roles at Reed Business Information and Investor Weekly.

On his appointment, Bailey said: “I’m very excited to be at the helm of the new BRW which will provide us with the flexibility and dynamism required to inform and excite our audience.

“With BRW’s 30 years of publishing heritage, my appointment is something I’m proud of and I look forward to transitioning this Fairfax flagship brand into a strong online, print and events offering.“

In 2014, BRW will further expand its audience across The Australian Financial Review masthead and Fairfax Media’s broader Business Media portfolio in print, online and video.

Social Media Editor Caitlin Fitzsimmons has also been promoted to the role of BRW’s Deputy Editor.

Fitzsimmons has worked as a journalist in Sydney, London and San Francisco, writing for titles including The Guardian and The Australian Financial Review.

“Together, Michael and Caitlin are the perfect team to achieve the growth and success we have outlined for BRW in 2014 and beyond. They are both well-respected business journalists in their own right and understand the objectives we have for the masthead as it cements a strong following,“ Aylmer said.

BRW’s flagship lists and events will continue including: Young Rich, Best Places to Work, Rich 200 and Fast 100.

BRW is part of the The Fairfax Business Network which allows advertisers to reach more than 4.16 million Australians* each month across print and digital platforms.
