Former Fairfax Radio DJ Howard Sattler claims he was sacked for having Parkinson’s disease

Veteran talk show host Howard Sattler has claimed he was not sacked by Fairfax Radio Network for quizzing former Prime Minister Julia Gillard over the sexuality of her partner, but because he had Parkinson’s disease.

The former Perth 6PR disk jockey was dismissed last year with Fairfax insisting he was fired for repeatedly asking Gillard during an interview on his Drive show whether Tim Mathieson was gay.

But in an interview with The Australian this morning (paywall) Sattler has claimed he was not fired for his line of questioning but because he had Parkinson’s.

Sattler, who is taking legal action Fairfax Radio for defamation and breach of contract, said: “It was a campaign by Destroy the Joint, then used by Fairfax to get rid of me. They got me. They succeeded and now I’m in a situation where I haven’t had any income for 18 months.

“Almost from the moment that I revealed my diagnosis to 6PR management, their attitude towards me turned negative. They had no care for how I was doing or coping, they just said they’d need to put in place regular meetings to check up on my condition.”

Fairfax said it does not comment on employment matter or on litigation.
