Former MasterChef judges reunite for charity cooking special

George Calombaris, Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan are teaming up for a one-off live charity event, with the former MasterChef judges to put on a 12-hour cookathon: ‘Cooking4India’.

The event will raise funds for India as the country suffers from COVID-19, and will be streamed live on YouTube from 3pm on Saturday, 19 June.

Calombaris, Preston and Mehigan revealed they will pass on approximately 80% of the ticket price to Give2Asia Australia, who will distribute funds across charities, Goonj, Seed and Oxfam India.

They’ll be joined by fellow celebrity chefs including Heston Blumenthal, Shannon Bennett, Manu Feildel(My Kitchen Rules), Adrian Richardson, Justine Schofield, Darren Purchese, Khanh Ong and Diana Chan, during the 12-hour cooking special.

“COVID has been life-changing and traumatic for many. But in India it is devastating. There are more than 400,000 cases a day and thousands dying everyday. So it’s time for us to pull together…!” Mehigan said on Instagram.

“Join @mattscravat @gcalombaris and me and many of our friends for a massive 12 hours of delicious cooking, food and fun…

“Cooking4India is a one of a kind live stream event via YouTube with one goal in mind….to raise as much money as we can..!”

Calombaris, Preston and Mehigan departed Ten’s MasterChef franchise in 2019, having been co-hosts of the program for 11 seasons.

At the time, Ten revealed that it had not been able to reach a commercial agreement “that was satisfactory to Matt, Gary and George”.

New judges Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo helped MasterChef to booming ratings in 2020 as Australia suffered through lockdowns, however, the current season is yet to scale those same heights.

Ten will hope that reviving Celebrity MasterChef later in 2021 will bring in big numbers, with the program returning for just the second time after first airing in 2009.
