Former Today Tonight EP John “Choof” Choueifate has returned to the industry as director of news, Sydney for Channel Ten.

Choueifate resigned from the Seven network in June after he denied reports he had left following “months of tensions”.

His appointment as director of news will see him take control of Ten Eyewitness News in Sydney as well as national bulletins and news segments from the city. He starts on December 16.

For Choueifate it is a return to the network where he was foreign editor and chief of staff from 1988 to 1991.

“I’m excited to be returning to the network where I began my television career,” he said in a statement. “Ten already delivers a quality bulletin and with the support of the team, which I hold in high regard, I want to take it to the next level. The emphasis will be on breaking more stories, local issues and more investigations.”

Ten Eyewitness News is one of the network’s strongest performers having dominated its 5pm timeslot this year and winning in women 25-54, according to OzTam’s annual ratings.

Hamish McClennan, CEO of Network Ten, said in a statement: “We are very pleased John has agreed to come back to Ten. He is one of the best news and current affairs executives in the country and will bring his vast experience and contacts to TEN Eyewitness News and our Sydney newsroom.”
