Guardian Australia crowdfunds environmental journalism project
Guardian Australia has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $50,000 to support Our wide brown land, a series on Australia’s neglected environmental issues.
The campaign, which launched this morning at 6am, has reached nearly $46,000 at the time of writing. The crowdfunding project is separate from the membership and one-off donation programs the site uses as part of its ‘diversified revenue streams’.
“We know our readers care deeply about the state of Australia’s environment,” said Guardian Australia editor, Lenore Taylor. “We commissioned this in-depth series of investigations according to what scientists and conservationists advised us were the environmental issues in most urgent need of attention. We would very much like to continue this reporting.”
The series will feature environmental reporters investigating issues and uncovering what can be done to protect Australia’s natural spaces.
It will be produced by Alexandra Spring, Guardian Australia’s editorial partnerships editor, and will run until the end of May.
This series comes after three successful fundraising campaigns by the Guardian’s US operation – This Land is Your Land, Break the Cycle and The Mother Load.
Great to see this get up so quickly. It shows the deep concern in the community about environmental issues. Making people part with their money is no mean feat.
