Hamish and Andy back on top of monthly podcast ranker as more independent publishers join the system

After being knocked off by AFL Trade Radio last month, Hamish and Andy have pushed their way back into the top position on the Australian Podcast Ranker. The duo debuted there for the ranker’s first release in October.

The system is also adding more podcast publishers to its ranks with Wil Anderson and Charlie Clausen’s TOFOP programs joining, along with Schwartz Media and The Parent Brand. Their inclusion will begin January 2020.

Anderson and Clausen’s podcasts include TOFOP, FOFOP, Wilosophy and 2 Guys 1 Cup.

Schwartz Media publishes The Saturday Paper and The Monthly, as well as daily news podcast 7am, and The Parent Brand is the network behind the award-winning Kinderling Kids Radio brand.

On the November ranking, which covers 28 October to 24 November, The Kyle & Jackie O Show podcast took second spot, rising from fourth last month, while Kate Tim and Marty held onto third. SEN/ Crocmedia’s Whateley jumped 14 places to secure fourth, followed by SEN Breakfast.

The only new podcast in the top 10 was News Corp Australia’s The Lighthouse, which follows the disappearance of Theo Hayez in Byron Bay. It debuted in seventh place. News Corp also had the biggest mover of the month in Police Tape which leapt 50 places to 47th.

After appearing in the top spot last ranking, AFL Trade Radio fell to 24th.

Joan Warner, CEO of industry body Commercial Radio Australia (CRA), said she was delighted the ranker was growing.

“We’re pleased to welcome these very successful independent publishers to the Australian Podcast Ranker. Their participation further consolidates the ranker as a collaborative cross-industry initiative that reflects the growth and diversity of this exciting medium,” said Warner.

“When Charlie and I started our first podcast nearly 10 years ago, we had no idea podcasting would grow into the industry it has become. Our hope is the Australian Podcast Ranker helps raise the awareness of Australian shows, and attracts new advertisers, so more people can make an income talking about dumb sh*t with their best mate,” he said.

The podcast ranker is powered by Triton Digital’s Podcast Metrics in accordance with IAB Tech Lab’s Podcast Measurement Guidelines. It launched in October with an initial list of publishers including the major radio brands and News Corp Australia.

CRA has appealed to other independent publishers to get involved with the system.
