Ice cream makers, advent calendars and white noise machine sales spike in July

Christmas in July has led to a notable shift in Australia’s shopping trends, with a dramatic rise in sales of advent calendars and holiday decorations.  

According to Shopify’s latest product update, there was a 752.2% month-on-month (MoM) increase in the sales of advent calendars while seasonal and holiday decorations also experienced a significant spike, up 151.1%.

Despite the cold weather, ice cream makers took the top spot for trending product categories for July, with an 881.5% increase in sales compared to the previous month.

In the beverage sector, flavoured alcoholic drinks emerged as the new favourite, with sales surging by 139.1%. This marks a notable shift from beer, which saw only a subtle increase of 4.1%, while spirits like vodka, tequila, and rum experienced declines.

However, whiskey remains Australia’s top beverage in terms of gross merchandise value (GMV), holding the fourth spot overall.

The rise of snack boards and grazing platters, also known as the ‘girl dinner’ trend no longer continues to be popular, with declines in cheese, meat, nuts, and cutting boards sales.

The quest for better sleep has driven a surge in white noise machine purchases, which soared by 237.5% compared to June. However, sales of sleepwear such as pyjamas dropped by 51.5%.

Beauty products dominated the shopping charts, with lotions, moisturisers, and makeup leading the sales, while hair straighteners and skincare rollers also saw substantial increases. Additionally, highlighters and luminizers saw a 30.2% boost, and sales of teeth whiteners grew by 14.8% MoM.

In the sports category, cricket bats, balls, and protective equipment all saw impressive increases. Moreover, interest in tennis equipment has declined by 38.5%.

Winter sports gear remains popular, with items like snowboard goggles and skis showing strong sales, while wetsuits emerged as the top sport-related purchase overall.
