Great advertising can open our eyes to new products, new categories and new ways of living. Catchphrases and taglines become so embedded in everyday conversations that we sometimes forget where they came from. But does advertising really hold sway over our culture, or is it cynically raiding the zeitgeist and exploiting the human experience for commercial ends?

The topic of whether advertising leads culture or whether advertising is led by culture will be put under the microscope in Powered by Nine’s Great Debate this coming Thursday, as Nine closes out two weeks of thought leadership, insights and creative workshops at the Powered by Nine Big Ideas Store.

Arguing in support of the motion that advertising leads culture is Powered’s director of strategy, insights and effectiveness, Toby Boon, alongside Rachael Fraser, head of strategy, M&C Saatchi, and Roshni Hegerman, executive director, McCann.

Against the motion, Powered’s enterprise director, Michele O’Neill, will team up with Andrew Wynne, principal at Joy agency, and Camille Gray, strategist at Rufus to argue that culture has a bigger role to play in leading advertising.

The debate will be moderated by Mumbrella’s Tim Burrowes.

The Great Debate will be followed by drinks and entertainment at The Big Ideas Store, located within Nine’s new North Sydney headquarters. Guests can also opt to view the debate via a live stream.
