Iron Man rockets to the top of the box office
Marvel’s third instalment of the Iron Man franchise has comprehensively taken out the top spot of the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia weekend box office.
The Walt Disney-distributed film made $14,090,713 on its debut weekend in Australia on 631 screens in both 2D and 3D. It also took out the highest average taking for a screen, with more than $22,000.
Starring Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce, Iron Man 3 has made more than its predecessor The Avengers, which took more than $13m on its opening weekend.
Animated comedy The Croods was bumped down to second place, taking in almost $1.5 million on 349 screens despite being its fifth week of release. Olympus Has Fallen was also pushed down one place, making $1,011,127 with an average of $4396 per screen.
Song For Marion, starring Terence Stamp and Gemma Arterton, made its debut at number 11, taking in $160,357, while fellow debut Lucky Di Unlucky Story was at number 12 with $158,889.
A Good Day to Die Hard fell the furthest this weekend, tumbling from 11 to 20 in its eighth week and making $58,153 across 51 screens.
